Doris Knows – Deli Fix Up. . . Happy Passover!
When I first met my husband Gil, he introduced me to one of his favorite Sunday rituals– a stroll to Zabar’s to buy bagels, cream cheese, smoked salmon, and of course the Sunday Times. He was so surprised when I told him that I’d never had Nova – it’s not exactly a Cuban staple . Now I can’t do without our Sunday ritual of bagels smeared with cream cheese and piled high with yummy smoked salmon!
My husband also took me to my first Seder (the Passover meal). It was wonderful. I love traditions and because I’m a good cook, I was chosen to be the designated Passover hostess. Thankfully, I’m a quick study. I learned to prepare the Seder with all the fixings. Now that all of his relatives have passed away, we’ve begun a new tradition and go to a friend/client’s house to celebrate!
Since Zabar’s is a hike, now that we live in Westport, when we want to get a real NYC-Style deli fix up, we go to…
Whether you eat in or take out you will not be disappointed by this stellar, old-fashioned, New York-style delicatessen. They’ve been serving real sour pickles, hot pastrami, corned beef, matzo ball soup, brisket– you name it– for over 50 years. If you want paper thin smoked salmon, like me, ask for Dennis!

Squeeze into this tiny deli in the heart of downtown Westport and then dive into the bowl of giant pickles you get with every order; but make sure you save room for one of their oversized and oh so yummy sandwiches! Oskar loves Oscar’s of course! Here he is enjoying the sun with deli owner, Lee.

Go for their beloved chicken noodle and matzo ball soup, a delicious crisp salad, or their fully loaded sandwiches like the Pastrami, Tongue, Cole Slaw with Russian on Rye (and those pickles!!). Dine in or take out, this deli is the real deal.
