Doris Knows – Flower Power, Happy Mother’s Day

I love flowers! My mom taught me all about flowers and gardening when I was little. To this day a beautiful vase of fresh cut flowers or a blossoming garden evokes wonderful memories.

My mom was born in Cuba and grew up surrounded by a flourishing garden. When she, my dad, and my brothers immigrated to New York City she couldn’t have a garden; but she made sure to always have plants in their apartment and a bouquet of fresh cut flowers every week. She loved all varieties, the more colorful the better.

I lived most of my life in NYC where I, too, surrounded my apartment with houseplants and a vase of weekly cut flowers. Every week I went to the Union Square Farmers’ Market and the nearby Flower District. When I moved to Connecticut, I continued to follow in my mom’s footsteps. Even though I now have a beautiful garden I still can’t give up my aromatic bouquets and tons of indoor plants.

I’m lucky to have several incredible florists close by for fragrant, fresh cut flowers. If I want a quick pick-me-up I zip into Trader Joe’s for a simple bouquet; but If I want to send a gorgeous arrangement to someone special or turn up the volume on a bouquet or centerpiece here are my favorite local florists. . .
